Parents: Creative Ways to Reflect Jesus in Your Child’s School

“It’s the most wonderful time, of the year.”  That is not a song that is just sung at Christmas time at my house, but also at that magical time called, “Back to School.” For our kids it is a time of sorrow because summer is over, but it is also a time of fresh optimism, and excitement. For us as parents, it is a time to make an impact for Jesus Christ in our valley. With school back in session we have a chance to show others the love of Jesus that we have inside of us and to fulfill the mission that God has given us. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, God has called you and I to spread the name of Christ to those around us.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

Now you might be thinking where should I start?  With all of the laws about separation of church and state and the overwhelming pressure to be politically correct with all you do and say as not to offend anyone, you might be saying to yourself, “where can I go to reach people for Jesus.”  Well if you have school aged kids or teens you have been strategically placed by God to be able to make a difference for Christ.  Your child’s school is a great place to make an impact for Jesus because you are already in and behind the lines. You already have relationships and opportunities in place to be a blessing to people.

2 Corinthians 2:15 We are to be the pleasing aroma of Christ to those we are around.

Get involved. Be Present. Get to know your child’s teacher, volunteer in the classroom, serve at school functions (carnivals, back to school night, etc.) FCA, Christian Clubs, Choir Boosters, Join or start a parent group that prays for the principal, teachers and other school officials. Host a team spaghetti dinner at your house the night before the game. Go to practices and talk to coaches. Buy pizza and gatorade for after practice. Encourage you student to get involved in Christian club and introduce yourself to the teacher that is in charge of the club. Attend “See You at the Pole,” with your kids, not to lead but to support and be seen. Think about other creative ideas that will allow you to reflect Jesus to the people in your sphere of influence. You can do it!

Going back to school doesn’t just mean making lunches, checking homework and driving to practice, it means a chance to make a difference for Christ in the lives of people.
